Eye doctors come in many flavors, but only one kind has attended
Medical School and has had extensive training taking care of patients
with eye diseases.
OPHTHALMOLOGISTS are EYE-MDs. They are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of many eye conditions. They
also perform eye surgery.
Other professionals who are called "eye doctors" are OPTOMETRISTS and OPTICIANS.
Optometrists or Eye-ODs attend a four year program after college. They are
adept at prescribing glasses and performing routine eye exams. They can
detect eye disease and usually refer patients with eye problems to OPHTHALMOLOGISTS.
Opticians are eye professionals working in optical stores or private offices
where they make and fit glasses. In general, all three professionals work
together.
Brighton Eye Associates is an OPHTHALMOLOGIC practice as I
am an EYE-MD. You can find more information about Ophthalmologists at
the website of the American Academy of Ophthalmologyhttp://www.aao.og/
